Indications of the Problem<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

He\u2019s \u201cthinking outside the box\u201d all right\u2014you can smell it (stronger than the usual urine smell) and see it (on surfaces like baseboards and curtains). Perhaps you\u2019ve seen your cat\u2019s quivering tail, as he stands and sprays, with back feet treading, emitting a jet vertically against a wall or other objects. He\u2019s marking his territory, not eliminating, which is urinating (horizontal, in puddles or drops). Marking\/spraying accounts for about 40% of problem behavior cases in cats.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Possible Causes<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

By marking\/spraying, your fur-child is \u201cinstant messaging\u201d other cats in the house, or those visiting from outside the home, that \u201cThis Land is My Land\u201d refrain.\u00a0 Real territorial insecurity, here. Spraying IS saying it.\u00a0 Once spraying happens inside your home, there\u2019s often a learned association between spraying and certain areas, which then become fixed branding posts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Potential Solutions<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

After ruling out any possible medical problems, the first step is to neuter or spay your cat.\u00a0 However, if s\/he continues to spray, we need to identify social or environmental triggers and then limit Noodles\u2019 exposure and reaction to them. This often means household changes and behavior modification.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As a professionally-trained, specifically cat behaviorist with over 45 years’ experience, I also manage other problems and fears; the aging cat, the feral cat and the stray cat can present special challenges of their own.
